FSC® Certified Redwood:
Imported from sustainably managed Scandinavian forests, Redwood is a high-quality softwood widely used for timber gates. It has a light, bright appearance and is supplied untreated. A protective, breathable finish is essential and should be applied to help preserve the timber and maximise its durability.UK Grown Larch (coming soon):
Locally sourced, UK Larch is an environmentally responsible choice that supports the UK timber industry. This resinous softwood has natural resistance to rot and decay, so pressure treatment isn’t required. Larch has a warm reddish-brown tone that gradually weathers to a silvery grey over time. A protective, breathable finish is recommended to help maintain the timber’s natural appearance and minimise seasonal movement. -
All gates are supplied untreated and should be finished before installation to protect the timber and extend its life. Taking the right steps early on helps ensure easier maintenance in the years ahead.
A suitable finish must be permeable or breathable, allowing the wood to release moisture vapour while preventing water ingress. This helps prevent blistering, cracking, and peeling of the finish while naturally protecting the timber over time. Avoid varnish-based products or low-cost acrylic paints, as these attempt to seal the surface but ultimately fail, trapping moisture and shortening the life of the gate.
Recommended finishes:
• Rubio Monocoat DuroGrit
• Osmo Country Colour / Country Shades
• Treatex Exterior OilThese premium finishes are available in clear or lightly tinted versions and a wide range of colours. Each offers durable, long-lasting protection while maintaining a natural, breathable finish and refined appearance. They are not available directly through Grovewood but can be easily sourced from reputable online suppliers.
